Halloween pulls a strange crowd into one living room. A witch, a skeleton, a cheap Spider-Man mask, and one person committed to a full 6-piece Beetlejuice fit. That mix breaks most party games because half the props get in the way of cards, dice, or trivia buzzers. The 8pm to midnight round order

Halloween nights compress. Guests arrive between 8pm and 9:15pm in a slow trickle because at least three of them are still fighting with contact lenses or fake blood at home. The kit runs a 15-minute soft-open with 2 short rounds of 4 shakes each, giving late arrivals a low-stakes on-ramp. From 9:15pm the pace shifts to 3 rounds of 8 shakes with 90 seconds of costume trash talk between each, which is the sweet spot our group chat shake tournament data landed on for mixed skill groups.

At 10pm the room usually hits peak energy for 40 minutes, which is where you slot the 3-round elimination bracket. Between 10:40pm and 11:20pm the pace drops for candy hunts, costume photos, and one sit-down round with 12 shakes and a 5-second cooldown per phase. Midnight closes with a slow 2-round wind-down that mirrors a 4-hour party battery curve so nobody's phone dies during the last group photo. That order held for 3 test nights across 11, 9, and 14 guests without a single round collapse.

Costume grip math: gloves, claws, and shake threshold

Costumes change how a hand grips a phone, and that changes shake amplitude. A bare hand at a natural wrist snap hits 14 to 18 m/s² on an iPhone 15, which sits above the current 11 m/s² ShakeGasm floor we shipped in the threshold tuning build log. A latex glove drops that peak by around 6 percent because the palm loses friction on the phone body. A witch claw or bear paw glove drops peak amplitude 14 to 22 percent depending on how much foam sits between the fingers and the case.

The fix is not a settings change, it is a round order fix. Put costumed grip groups in the first 10 minutes when the floor is lenient by design, and keep the elimination bracket for hands that have already re-gripped once or twice. Two of our 11 test guests were in full latex claws and both cleared the round-4 median without shedding the costume. A bare hand cheat check ran silent in the background and flagged zero fake shakes, in line with the anti-cheat filter numbers from last month.

Lighting the room without killing shake detection

Halloween lighting is dark on purpose, and dark rooms mess with phone screens more than they mess with sensors. Accelerometers do not care about lux at all, so shake reads stay clean even under a single candle. Screens are the actual bottleneck because auto-brightness on both iPhone and Pixel drops output to around 12 percent under 3 lux, which makes the shake counter and score readout hard to read across a coffee table.

The kit runs one hot pink #e91e63 LED strip along the ceiling at 40 percent brightness, which measures around 22 lux at the phone pile. That number keeps auto-brightness above the drop threshold on iPhone 14 and 15 and on Pixel 8 and 9. Candles stay for atmosphere and add another 4 to 8 lux at close range without confusing the sensor. Skip fog machines during active rounds because guests wave phones through the fog and pick up condensation on the case, which shows up as sensor noise. Save the fog for the 10:40pm photo break.

Battery numbers across a 4-hour costume night

A 4-hour Halloween shift with 11 guests took an iPhone 15 host from 91 percent to 42 percent battery, which sits within 3 points of our published battery drain model. Guest phones ranged from 34 percent to 61 percent end-of-night because most of them dimmed their screens to save costume-photo battery. The 25 percent floor rule held: nobody dropped below it before midnight, and the two guests who came in at 42 percent battery both plugged in during the 10:40pm break.

What to skip when the candy runs low

By 11pm two things always break: the candy bowl and one guest's patience for long brackets. Cut the second bracket, cut long-form trivia rounds, and pivot to short shake rounds of 6 shakes with a 3-second cooldown between phases. That pacing keeps the room engaged for the final 40 minutes without asking anyone to focus for more than 90 seconds at a stretch.

Also skip any round that requires two-handed input if half your room is holding candy corn in one hand and a solo cup in the other. A one-handed round order is the safer default from 11pm onward.
